Eight Years of Hard Work by Advocates, One Step Closer to Reality

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Achieving A Better Life Experience Act. NFXF advocates have been urging their members of Congress to pass ABLE since 2006. The act establishes ABLE accounts that allow individuals with disabilities and their families to save for future expenses in much the same way that others can save for college through a 529 saving plan.

“This is a significant step forward for individuals living with Fragile X and their families. ABLE accounts will encourage savings and increased self-sufficiency and independence for the Fragile X and the broader disability community.” said Tony Ferlenda, CEO of the NFXF.

According to Jeffrey Cohen, Director of Public Policy & Government Affairs of the NFXF, “Since 2006 more than 1,000 NFXF advocates have traveled to Washington D.C. urging Congress to pass the ABLE Act. Passage by the House brings this dream one step closer to reality.” The NFXF sponsors an annual Advocacy Day in D.C. to educate members of Congress about and need to increase research funding for Fragile X, the most common cause of inherited developmental disability and genetic-cause of autism.

Passing a bill into law is a three step process. Now that the ABLE Act has passed the House, it goes to the Senate for a vote and then to the President who signs it into law. The NFXF will keep you up-to-date on the act’s progress. Thank you to all the advocates who have supported the ABLE Act over the past eight years. Today your efforts paid off and we are one step closer to the bill becoming law.
