PUBLISHED FOR FRIENDS OF CONQUER FRAGILE X FOUNDATION
Spring 2001 Newsletter

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It’s hard to believe that four months have passed since our last Newsletter, and in this Newsletter we have some very good and important news to share with you, letting you know some of what your support and friendship have helped us to accomplish.

We also want to thank you for your many comments on the new format of our Newsletter, which we worked hard to develop so that you would find it informative and interesting. Many of you feel that we have found just
the right button. At the same time, your comments and suggestions for its continued improvement are greatly welcome.

In April we will be celebrating the second anniversary of Conquer Fragile X Foundation. I want to thank all of you: our generous supporters, our Board of Advisors, our Scientific Advisors, our participating parents and Parent Group Leaders - all of whom have helped us to make the exceptional strides we have made in such a short period.

Recently, someone referred to the “burden” that has been on my shoulders in these early stages of the Foundation. That brought to mind an advertisement of many, many years ago: a little boy is carrying another little boy. He is asked, “Isn’t he a heavy burden for you to carry?” The answer, “He’s not heavy, he’s my brother.” This effort has never been a “burden” for me. Matthew is my grandson.

“Fragile X is a ‘research portal’ for other brain disorders. It is the leading-edge candidate for a breakthrough in understanding many other diseases, especially autism.”

Dr. Randi Hagerman in her presentation to the U.S. Congress in 2000.

Tea Honoring Donors

On February 13, 2001, Sande and Harris Hollin sponsored an afternoon English Tea and Grand Piano Recital in appreciation and honor of those donors that had contributed at the $500 to $25,000 level. It was held at the Palm Beach Country Club where the award-winning Argentinean pianist, Dario Ntaca, performed Argentinean tangos and Chopin waltzes.

In addition to being an award-winning concert pianist, Maestro Dario Ntaca is a conductor and has formed his own symphony orchestra in Argentina. He has also founded two international youth symphonies on
behalf of the government. In addition, he is music director for a music festival in San Luis and is Music Director for the Guild of International Piano Competitions.

Dr. Howard Cedar Receives A National Institute of Health Grant

We were thrilled to learn that the NIH has agreed to fund one of our own outstanding scientists in Fragile X research, Dr. Howard Cedar (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), who is a recipient of the Israel Prize for Science. This grant, which is a new milestone for our virtual Fragile X Research Center, is being co-funded by FRAXA Research Foundation.

In keeping with Harris Hollin’s policy that we advise our scientists and participating institutions of all possible grant funding opportunities for research in Fragile X, he advised Dr. Cedar of this opportunity. Dr. Cedar wrote, “The only reason I knew about the NIH program was through you. Kol Hakavod to you !!”
