Conclusions

The patient with FXS usually presents with an array of physical and behavioral problems that require monitoring and treatment. Medical complications associated with the syndrome require detection and early treatment. Although no cure is available, several medication possibilities have been presented and can be used to treat specific behavior problems. Although some patients with FXS have not required psychopharmacologic intervention, many have benefited from one or more of the medications discussed. If behavior problems exist, an appropriate medication trial can be considered in conjunction with additional intervention, discussed in chapters 9, 10, and 11. Further research involving controlled medication trials is necessary to clarify the most effective medication options in children and adults with FXS.
