Research Funding by the National Fragile X Foundation

  • The National Fragile X Foundation (NFXF) funds both basic science and clinical research. Announcements, reviews of applications, and awards are rotated, between the two categories, on a six-month basis. Projects are scored by members of our Scientific and Clinical Advisory Committee based on the criteria noted in the Request For Applications. Those criteria typically include, "research endeavors that will lead to better recognition, treatment and an eventual cure of children and adults with fragile X syndrome." Applications are judged on innovation, likelihood of contributing critical new knowledge, and scientific merit.

The Scientific and Clinical Advisory Committee (SCAC) of the National Fragile X Foundation is comprised of 15-20 members from a variety of disciplines, organizations, institutions and countries. Once the NFXF Board of Directors has voted to approve a research budget, these scientists and clinicians have complete and final authority in the awarding of research grants. Under the leadership of the SCAC chair, the application reviewers are selected based on their particular expertise and only after it has been determined that they have no conflict of interest nor are associated with any of the proposals.

The National Fragile X Foundation welcomes all inquiries from potential researchers and institutions.
