What are the Characteristics of Syntax Development in Boys?

Syntax, or the sequencing of words in phrases and sentences, is generally thought to be in keeping with overall cognitive development, although much more research is needed in this area. Syntax development, then, is seen as delayed for many boys, not deviant or disordered.

Teen boy gettin into swimming poolMany boys with fragile X syndrome do learn to speak in sentences, although some remain at a level of short phrases. The cluttering quality of speech in boys with fragile X may cause breakdowns in syntax, as there are syllable repetitions, false starts, reformulations, and an irregular rate.

Boys with fragile X may have particular syntax problems, such as with question forms (e.g., "What it is?" for "What is it?" or "Why you not go?" for "Why didn't you go?"), negatives, and pronoun usage. Some may reverse pronouns or use their own names rather than "I" or "me", e.g. "Jack is tired. Jack needs a nap." when talking about themselves.
